About Dr. Koch

Dr. Koch has been a practicing orthopaedic surgeon and member of Humboldt Orthopaedic Associates since 1980. He began his practice of general orthopaedic surgery with a focus in knee and hand surgery after finishing his orthopaedic surgery residency and fellowship training. Dr. Koch did his orthopaedic surgery training at the University of Hawaii and then did a knee surgery and athletic injury fellowship with internationally recognized knee expert, Douglas Jackson, MD, of Long Beach, California. He followed this training with a second fellowship in hand- and micro-surgery with recognized hand- and micro-surgery expert, Jack Tupper, MD, in Oakland, California.

Dr. Koch became team physician for College of the Redwoods in 1982 and Humboldt State University in 1983. He subsequently became adjunct professor of Health and Physical Education at Humboldt State University and has taught Advanced Sports Medicine and Athletic Training classes at Humboldt State University for many years.

In 2002 Dr. Koch began limiting his practice and now focuses his practice on knee surgery with some general sports medicine and hand surgery.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, America Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, California Medial Association and Humboldt - Del Norte Medical Society.

Dr. Koch grew up in San Fransisco, California, did his undergraduate studies at University of California at Berkeley and then graduated from UCLA Medical School. He did his internship at USC - Los Angeles County Hospital before starting his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Hawaii, followed by his knee and hand surgery fellowships.

When not doing orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Koch enjoys surfing, fly fishing, snow skiing, volleyball and walking the beach with his family.

Dr. Koch's primary practice is at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka, but he is also on staff and does surgery at Mad River Community Hospital in Arcata and Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna.

Dr. Koch performs over 200 knee surgeries per year and has vast experience in knee arthroscopy, ligament repair and reconstruction, cartilage repair and resurfacing and knee replacement surgery, focusing currently on rotating platform - mobile bearing techniques.
